Karachi: Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab emphasized the need for young and determined leadership to make timely and courageous decisions that can change the country’s fate. The mayor, speaking to a delegation at the headquarters of Baldia Uzma Karachi, outlined efforts to improve the city’s infrastructure, including street lights, bridges, and flyovers, alongside an increase in tax collection.
According to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, these measures have resulted in a significant rise in revenue, with three billion rupees expected annually from tax collection through KE.
Mayor Wahab also highlighted the focus on improving the supply of clean water and sewage systems, noting that practical steps are underway to address these issues. Control of the Water and Sewerage Corporation and Solid Waste Management Board falls under the mayor’s remit, aiding in the collective and rapid development of the city. A strategy involving full communication and consultation with citizens and other municipal bodies has yielded effective results, he stated.
Financial stability, the mayor noted, is crucial for running any organization. After increasing the rent of KMC shops—from as low as two hundred rupees to one thousand rupees—revenue jumped from Rs.80 million to Rs.255 million, despite an Rs.82 million monthly expenditure on salaries and pensions. Development projects supported by the Sindh government are underway, with more planned to benefit the general public.
Municipal Commissioner Afzal Zaidi briefed the delegation on KMC’s responsibilities, emphasizing the focus on delivering quality municipal services and resolving citizens’ issues promptly. The delegation visited the historic KMC building, gaining insight into its significance and the organization’s function. Members described the visit as informative and effective.
