Karachi, Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab emphasized the ongoing efforts to improve local government affairs in Karachi during a meeting with Provincial Law Minister Muhammad Umar Soomro. The Mayor highlighted the role of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) in enhancing the city’s infrastructure and providing better facilities to its citizens.
According to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, Mayor Wahab explained that the KMC Council is actively working on resolutions to improve local governance. The goal is to make the city council a central platform for addressing the basic problems of citizens and advancing the development and improvement of Karachi. He underscored that development processes in the city are being guided by consultations with Council members.
Law Minister Muhammad Umar Soomro, during the meeting, expressed his support for the KMC’s initiatives. He assured that the provincial government would provide assistance for further legislation needed for the city’s betterment. The Minister emphasized the importance of the rule of law, justice provision, and equal access to legal aid for all citizens.
Mayor Wahab detailed the functions of the KMC under the Local Government Act, which governs administrative and financial management in the province. He noted that Karachi, divided into seven districts and 25 towns, relies on the union committees of each town for local insights. The chairman of these committees, who are also members of the KMC council, play a crucial role in identifying and addressing area-specific problems.
The Mayor also highlighted that several major development projects are underway to improve Karachi’s basic infrastructure. He expressed satisfaction with the Sindh government’s support and guidance in these endeavors, noting the provincial government’s commitment to developing Karachi as the country’s largest city and economic center.
Provincial Law Minister Muhammad Umar Soomro commended the efforts of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation in making the local government system more stable and efficient. He assured the Mayor of continued cooperation and support from the provincial government.
