KARACHI: Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab, in a recent press conference, commended the efforts of elected representatives, officers, and staff for their work during Eid-ul-Adha and called for a significant budget allocation to support the city’s development. He emphasized the need for political unity to ensure Karachi receives a fair share in the national budget.
During the press conference at the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) head office, Mayor Wahab highlighted the sanitation efforts over the Eid holidays, during which 146,801 tons of waste were collected across the city and transported to landfill sites. He noted the involvement of the Mayor’s office, the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board, and local representatives in overseeing the operation, which involved setting up 96 collection points citywide.
Mayor Wahab stressed the importance of Karachi receiving adequate financial support, proposing a Rs. 100 billion allocation in the upcoming federal budget. He urged political parties, including the MQM and Jamaat-e-Islami, to work together to advocate for Karachi’s needs in Parliament. He welcomed oversight from federal and provincial representatives to ensure transparency in the use of funds.
The Mayor also addressed issues related to waste management, acknowledging areas for improvement and the need for ongoing coordination among city officials. He reported a significant reduction in complaints during the Eid period, with most of the 3,699 complaints received via a 24-hour helpline addressed promptly.
Looking forward, Mayor Wahab announced the commencement of drain cleaning operations and the submission of Rs. 37 billion in development schemes to the Sindh government for budget consideration. He also urged political figures to avoid divisive rhetoric and focus on constructive efforts for the city’s progress.
The Mayor concluded by expressing hope for federal government action and collaboration among various stakeholders to address Karachi’s infrastructure and development challenges.
