Karachi, – At the Pavilion Mayors Conference held in Dubai, Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab emphasized the necessity of global cooperation to support countries impacted by climate change. He highlighted the initiatives taken by the Pakistan Peoples Party, led by Chairman Bilawal Bhutto, in addressing the aftermath of the 2022 floods in Sindh province.
According to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, Mayor Wahab, in his address at the conference, outlined the challenges faced by Sindh province, particularly Karachi, and the measures being implemented to resolve these issues. He stressed that Karachi has been taking significant steps to enhance basic amenities for its citizens, including improving the road network in industrial and commercial zones to boost economic activities. Mayor Wahab also discussed the potential for establishing solar and wind farms in Karachi with financial cooperation, aiming to provide affordable and clean energy to the people.
During his speech, Mayor Wahab shed light on Karachi’s response to natural disasters, including the 2022 flood and the 2015 heatwave. He noted that many major cities worldwide are grappling with natural disasters due to climate change, and there’s an increasing occurrence of heatwaves linked to rising temperatures. He emphasized the urgent need for a strong global strategy to address these challenges.
Mayor Wahab highlighted efforts in Karachi, such as plantation drives and the creation of artificial forests, to combat climate change. These initiatives include developing a large park on the city beach, where afforestation is being carried out extensively. The goal of these measures is not only to fight the effects of climate change but also to improve the city’s weather conditions through positive action. He called for the adoption of a common strategy at the global level to effectively tackle these environmental challenges.
