Karachi: Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab assured that the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) will not face any funding shortages in the coming years, with an expected inflow of around 10 to 11 billion rupees under the annual development program and over 3 billion rupees in various taxes. He emphasized the need to expedite road construction and repair work across all districts, directing that contracts should only be awarded to contractors who meet high standards of quality.
According to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, Mayor Wahab made these remarks while chairing a meeting of the Engineering Department at KMC’s head office, which was attended by Municipal Commissioner S. M. Afzal Zaidi, Director General Azhar Ali Shah, and chief engineers and executive engineers from all districts. He stressed that road construction, infrastructure improvement, and street lighting remain top priorities for the city and called for swift action on key road projects, including I.I. Chundrigar Road, Orangi Road, Gialana Road, Baloch Colony Road, and Mewa Shah Road.
The Mayor instructed the Director General of Engineering to award contracts based solely on merit and blacklist contractors who fail to meet the required standards. He also noted that improvements in Karachi’s parks, zoo, and safari park have been well received by the public and media, while urging continuous progress in street lighting to improve public safety.
Mayor Wahab emphasized that excuses related to a lack of funds or authority are no longer valid and warned engineers that disciplinary action would follow if improvements in road construction and infrastructure were not visible. He urged collaboration and diligence in enhancing Karachi’s infrastructure to meet public expectations.
