Karachi, Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab has established a five-member committee to investigate public complaints about the Spencer Eye Hospital. This decision follows his surprise inspection of the hospital, leading to the immediate forced leave of its medical superintendent.
According to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, comprises Union Council (UC) chairmen, with four members from the Pakistan People’s Party and one from PTI. The mayor’s visit included a thorough check of doctor and staff attendance, inspection of the Outpatient Department (OPD) register, and an examination of the hospital’s operation theater and doctors’ rooms. The mayor also visited staff residences within the hospital premises and noted concerns about the performance and management of the hospital, which is spread over an area of more than one acre.
Expressing dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs at Spencer Eye Hospital, Mayor Wahab highlighted the institution’s historical significance as one of Karachi’s oldest and most important eye hospitals, previously regarded as the best in Asia. He emphasized the need for a complete investigation to understand why the hospital is no longer providing satisfactory treatment facilities for eye disease patients as it did in the past.
The Mayor criticized the poor sanitation and security arrangements at the hospital and stressed the importance of fully functional wards, especially for the large number of poor and middle-class patients relying on the hospital for treatment and surgery. He emphasized the hospital administration’s responsibility to inform about its needs so that they can be addressed and citizens can receive the best quality eye care.
Furthermore, Mayor Wahab announced plans to form monitoring committees consisting of public representatives to review the performance of other hospitals managed by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC). He stressed that KMC hospitals should be fully operational, and administrative officers, doctors, and staff should recognize their responsibilities to prevent patient complaints.
This initiative reflects Mayor Wahab’s commitment to improving healthcare services in Karachi and ensuring that key medical facilities like Spencer Eye Hospital meet the community’s needs effectively.
