Karachi: Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab, alongside Deputy Mayor Karachi Salman Abdullah Marda and MD Water Corporation Asadullah Khan, inaugurated the revamped Jamila Street Pumping Station on Saturday. The ceremony, attended by prominent figures including PPP Leader Khalil Hot and various UC Chairmen, marked the completion of the station’s construction and repair. The mayor highlighted the increase in the station’s capacity from 9 million gallons to 1.7 million gallons, aimed at easing sewage issues in Old City Area, Sadar, Lyari, Garden, and surrounding areas.
According to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, the mayor emphasized the significance of the area, historically underserved despite its political importance. He announced the installation of five new imported pumps and the implementation of standby generators to counteract load shedding issues. The improvements are expected to facilitate better sewage drainage, particularly benefiting the Lyari region. The mayor also credited Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s efforts in enabling development work in previously inaccessible areas like Cheil Chowk, located near the pumping station.
In his address, Mayor Wahab recounted the historical value of the Jamila Street Pumping Station, established in 1887, as a testament to Karachi’s rich past. He urged political unity, referencing PTI members’ inconsistent stances, and advocated for Bilawal’s leadership in bringing employment and development. He criticized the construction of unauthorized structures on public lands and urged responsible usage of infrastructure by entities like Port Qasim and Karachi Port Trust. The mayor reiterated KMC’s commitment to serving all areas impartially, focusing on infrastructure improvement for the city’s development.
