Mayor Announces Comprehensive Urban Welfare and Historical Preservation Plans for Karachi

Karachi, Mayor, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, has announced a series of initiatives aimed at enhancing urban welfare and preserving the historical heritage of the city. These initiatives include improving the tax recovery system, resolving parking fee issues, anti-encroachment and land disputes, and constructing parking plazas to ease traffic problems.

According to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, Mayor Wahab made these announcements during a press conference at Denso Hall. He was joined by several city officials, including Municipal Commissioner Syed Afzal Zaidi, Mayor Karachi’s Representative for Political Affairs Karamullah Waqasi, and others. The Mayor emphasized that all revenue generated from the improved tax system will be dedicated to public welfare, as decided by the city council’s elected representatives.

Mayor Wahab also highlighted the city’s rich historical heritage and the plans to restore and improve key historical buildings such as Denso Hall, Frere Hall, Maryweather Tower, and the KMC building. He announced the establishment of the first Metropolitan Museum of Pakistan in Denso Hall, dating back to 1886, to educate future generations about Karachi’s history.

In addition to the cultural initiatives, Mayor Wahab provided updates on the city’s fiscal improvements. He compared the revenue generated in the first six months of 2023, amounting to 580 million rupees, with the one billion rupees earned during his five months in office. This increase in revenue, he said, is a testament to the effective governance of his administration.

Furthermore, the Mayor discussed the importance of recognizing individuals who have significantly contributed to the city. He announced the institution of the Taghama e Karachi award, to be presented annually on Independence Day to notable figures, including municipal staff, law enforcement personnel, and professionals from various fields, for their service to Karachi.

Mayor Wahab also called on citizens to play an active role in maintaining cleanliness and proper vehicle parking. He highlighted the issue of misuse of public spaces for personal advertising and emphasized the need for civic responsibility.

The announcements made by Mayor Wahab reflect a comprehensive approach to addressing Karachi’s urban challenges while paying homage to its historical legacy. The initiatives are expected to significantly impact the city’s development and the well-being of its residents.
