Lucknow: A significant eviction initiative led by the Yogi Adityanath government in Akbarnagar, Lucknow, has rendered thousands of residents, predominantly Muslims, homeless, as part of a plan to develop the area into an ecotourism hub.
According to Kashmir Media Service, on June 19, local authorities dismantled approximately 1,800 structures, including 1,169 residential homes and 101 commercial units, to make way for the Kukrail Riverfront project. Many of the displaced residents had been living in Akbarnagar long before the establishment of the development authority, sparking debates over the legitimacy and humanity of the demolition process.
The initiative, while aimed at enhancing ecotourism, has been criticized for disproportionately affecting marginalized communities, leading to allegations of discrimination and calls for a reassessment of development priorities to better respect the rights and homes of existing residents.
