Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has sent an urgent open letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling for significant legal reforms to tackle the rising incidence of rape in India.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Banerjee’s letter was prompted by the recent rape and murder of a junior doctor in Kolkata, an event that has led to widespread protests and a national conversation on the safety of women. In the letter, she pointed out that nearly 90 rapes are reported daily across the country.
Banerjee proposed the establishment of Fast Track Special Courts dedicated to handling rape cases, suggesting that these courts conclude trials within 15 days to deliver timely justice. She emphasized the need for stringent penalties for those found guilty of rape, aiming to deter such crimes with more severe consequences.
The situation’s severity was underlined by Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee, who used social media to advocate for faster legal processes and stricter punishments. He noted the alarming frequency of rape in India, underscoring the urgency for actionable reforms.
