Beijing, Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu has commended the strategic partnership between the Maldives and China, asserting that Beijing fully supports the sovereignty of the Indian Ocean island nation amidst escalating diplomatic tensions with India.
According to Kashmir Media Service, President Muizzu’s remarks came against the backdrop of growing unease in Maldives-India relations following his assumption of office in November last year. During his state visit to Beijing, upon the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping, Muizzu emphasized that China has been aiding Maldives’ development since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1972.
The visit, which saw Maldives and China elevate their relationship to a strategic partnership, was highlighted by discussions around the Belt and Road Initiative, a factor Muizzu believes has significantly enhanced bilateral relations. In an interview with CGTN, China’s state-run channel, he noted the mutual respect between the two nations and China’s non-interference in Maldives’ internal affairs as the foundation of their strong relationship.
President Muizzu expressed confidence in the future strengthening of China-Maldives relations, applauding President Xi’s leadership in prioritizing citizens’ interests and advancing China’s economic growth. He also acknowledged Xi’s assurance of China’s support in helping the Maldives achieve its developmental goals.
Focusing on his vision for the Maldives, Muizzu spoke about enhancing the nation’s economy and fostering progress to meet the people’s expectations. He indicated the shift in regional alliances, pointing out India’s declining influence in the area due to its current government’s Hindutva-driven policies.
