Majority of Pakistanis Adhere to Eclipse Practices, Survey Reveals

Karachi: A recent survey by Gallup and Gilani Pakistan indicates that a significant portion of the Pakistani population believes in refraining from eating or drinking during a lunar eclipse. The study shows that 61% of respondents hold this belief, with stronger adherence among women, individuals with less than FA education, and older adults.

The survey included a representative sample of 753 adult men and women across Pakistan, covering both urban and rural areas in all four provinces. Participants were asked to evaluate the truth of the statement that one should avoid eating and drinking during a lunar eclipse. The results revealed that 41% viewed it as ‘very true’, while 20% considered it ‘somewhat true’. In contrast, 23% dismissed it as ‘not true at all/just beliefs’, 11% were uncertain, and 5% offered no response.

These findings underscore the persistence of traditional beliefs related to lunar eclipses in Pakistan, particularly within certain demographics. The data highlights the influence of cultural and religious practices on dietary behavior during such celestial events.

The survey was conducted via telephonic interviews from September 12 to September 23, 2025, and has an error margin of approximately ± 2-3 percent at a 95% confidence level. This study was facilitated by Gallup and Gilani Pakistan, the country’s affiliate of Gallup International, with support from the Gilani Research Foundation.
