LUMS and NGC to Convene Workshop on Electrifying Local Manufacturing

Lahore: The LUMS Energy Institute, in collaboration with the National Grid Company (NGC), is set to host a significant national workshop focused on indigenizing the power sector. Scheduled for May 24, 2025, at LUMS in Lahore, the event aims to formulate a strategic roadmap to bolster Pakistan’s electrical equipment manufacturing capabilities. Federal Minister for Energy, Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari, will be the chief guest, with prominent figures like Engr. Waseem Nazir, Chairman of the Pakistan Engineering Council, addressing the participants.

The workshop seeks to unite leaders from various sectors, including power, local manufacturing, regulatory authorities, and academia, to create a cohesive plan for enhancing local manufacturing. Prof. Dr. Fiaz Ahmad Chaudhry of NGC highlighted the collaborative nature of the event, which intends to empower Pakistan’s electrical manufacturing ecosystem.

A key feature of the workshop will be the launch of Pakistan’s first Power Equipment Manufacturing Dashboard. Developed by the LUMS Energy Institute, this digital platform aims to track localization progress and identify strategic investment opportunities, serving as a vital component of the Power Sector Indigenization Plan.

The forum will include expert discussions on the challenges and opportunities in localizing electrical equipment across various segments of generation, transmission, and distribution. It will also assess the capabilities of local manufacturers to meet national demands, with recommendations to be presented to policymakers.

This initiative is part of Pakistan’s broader energy reforms outlined in the National Electricity Policy 2023-2027, which seeks to reduce import reliance and enhance indigenous capabilities. Through collaboration among public institutions, industry, and academia, the workshop aims to strengthen Pakistan’s energy infrastructure towards greater self-reliance and sustainability.
