Karachi, The Srinagar-Leh highway in the higher reaches of Kashmir and Ladakh in occupied Jammu and Kashmir has been closed following light snowfall, particularly at Zojila Pass. This weather event has impacted travel and transport in the region, with road conditions becoming slippery and hazardous.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the Zojila Pass along the Srinagar-Leh highway experienced light snowfall, while the nearby health resort Sonamarg in Ganderbal district witnessed light to moderate snowfall on Saturday. The snowfall, although light, was sufficient to disrupt traffic movement across Zojila Pass, prompting authorities to suspend travel for safety reasons.
In addition to Zojila, the official of the MeT Centre in Leh reported that light snowfall occurred in several areas, including Kargil, Zanskar, and Minamarg. The weather conditions in these regions have led to cautionary measures to ensure the safety of travelers and residents.
The closure of the Srinagar-Leh highway underscores the challenges faced in mountainous regions during the winter months, where even light snowfall can significantly affect transportation and connectivity. The authorities are monitoring the situation closely and will provide updates regarding the reopening of the highway as conditions improve.
