Law Minister Leads Inaugural Meeting of Committee for Independent Drug Pricing in Pakistan

Islamabad: A newly formed committee, initiated under the Prime Minister’s directives, convened its first meeting today to tackle drug pricing issues in Pakistan. Chaired by the Law Minister, the session gathered key stakeholders to discuss the structure and function of independent drug pricing authorities worldwide, aiming to establish a similar body in Pakistan.

According to Press Information Department, the committee reviewed global best practices and debated potential models suitable for Pakistan’s unique needs. A comprehensive working paper is scheduled for development, which will outline the primary challenges facing the pharmaceutical sector, particularly in pricing and market distortions caused by imported medicines. This document will also highlight specific drug categories that currently bypass government pricing controls.

The session underscored the need to distinguish between the roles of pricing and regulation within the industry. The committee agreed that while regulation should focus on maintaining drug standards, pricing mechanisms ought to be more market-driven and free from extensive state intervention. Plans are also in place to enhance the operational environment to re-attract international pharmaceutical firms that have previously withdrawn from the Pakistani market.

As the committee moves forward, it will continue to provide updates on its progress in refining the framework for the pharmaceutical industry in Pakistan.
