Law Minister Clarifies Position on Fatwas, Parliamentary Discussions on Supreme Court Verdict

Islamabad: In a recent parliamentary session, Minister for Law and Justice Azam Nazeer Tarar emphasized that no individual has the authority to issue fatwas against others, reinforcing the legislative consensus on religious and legal matters. This statement came in response to concerns raised by lawmaker Sahibzada Hamid Raza regarding the finality of the Prophethood, a topic of significant importance in the House.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the discussion also touched on a recent Supreme Court verdict, which the Minister suggested could be deliberated further in an appropriate Parliamentary forum to decide the future course of action. The session saw calls from other lawmakers for the creation of a special committee to deeply engage with Ulema, scholars, and legal experts on this sensitive issue.

The parliamentary committee on law and justice has been tasked with further discussions. In addition to these debates, several legislative measures were introduced, including amendments to election laws and constitutional articles, and bills aimed at improving public order and employee benefits. The House also passed the National Excellence Institute Bill, 2024, demonstrating a busy legislative agenda. Parliamentary sessions are set to continue with the House reconvening on Friday.
