Largest Wildlife Protection Operation in South Punjab Lauded by Punjab’s Leadership

Lahore: Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif commended the joint efforts of the wildlife department, district administration, and police for executing the largest-ever operation in South Punjab aimed at safeguarding wildlife and rare bird species. In a statement, she praised the teams for their bravery and commitment to their duty. Senior provincial minister Marrium Aurangzeb echoed these sentiments, applauding the team for enforcing the law despite significant resistance, and emphasized the government’s “zero tolerance policy” on wildlife protection. She urged citizens to report any illegal wildlife activities to authorities via hotline 1107.

The operation was conducted under the newly amended Punjab Wildlife Act 2025, which classifies illegal wildlife trade as a non-bailable offense with penalties of up to seven years in prison and a fine of Rs 5 million. The crackdown focused on illegal wildlife markets in Multan, specifically the Godri Bird Market and the Pigeon Market. Led by Director General of the Wildlife Department Mudassar Riaz Malik, the raids resulted in the recovery of hundreds of rare birds and animals, including parrots, chakors, peacocks, and pheasants. Authorities also confiscated eight trucks filled with these wildlife species.

The operation met with resistance, as the involved mafia allegedly attacked the raiding team. Police responded and arrested eight individuals who resisted with arms, and subsequently sealed over 40 shops. An attempted murder case was filed against unidentified individuals who fired shots during the raid at Godri Market, with ongoing efforts to apprehend them. Additionally, charges under anti-terrorism laws have been brought against the illegal bird dealers.
