Lahore, Caretaker Information Minister Murtaza Solangi, speaking at the International Media and Communication Conference in Lahore today, emphasized the growing threat of misinformation disseminated through artificial intelligence (AI) to states and democracy worldwide. He raised concerns about the challenges posed by modern media practices to traditional journalistic principles.
According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Solangi underscored the critical need for a gatekeeper system in journalism, a principle he believes has been compromised by contemporary media dynamics. He stressed the importance of having dedicated fact-checking departments in newsrooms to counter the spread of misinformation, particularly by propagandists who might mislead the public.
Highlighting the significance of the year 2024 as a pivotal election year in various countries, the Information Minister urged the media industry to assume a responsible role. He pointed out the potential for responsible application of artificial intelligence in tackling various challenges, including those in the realm of information dissemination.
