Ladakh body to revive movement for people’s rights

Leh, May 12, 2023 (PPI-OT): The Leh Apex Body (LAB), one of the main two socio-political and religious bodies in Ladakh, has announced revival of the movement for people’s rights. A statement of LAB said that a meeting chaired by Thupstan Chhewang decided that public opinion will be mobilized in different areas of the territory and a meeting with the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), the other primary social, religious and political organisation in the region will be held in this regard.

The statement said the meeting decided that the LAB teams would visit different regions of Ladakh to sensitize people at grassroots level about importance of grant of Sixth Schedule, Statehood and problems of unemployment and other issues connected to the region. “The meeting also decided that the Apex body would meet representatives of the Kargil Democratic Alliance soon and discuss future course of action collectively,” the statement said.

Notably, in an exclusive report recently published by a Jammu-based newspaper, the Modi regime has virtually ruled out Statehood as well as Sixth Schedule status for Ladakh, the principal demands of the LAB and KDA. However, it was mulling empowerment of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Councils (LAHDCs), Leh and Kargil, either by an Act of Indian Parliament or by an order of the Home Ministry. Reportedly, in addition to the powers for protection of land, culture etc., the twin Councils of Leh and Kargil will be empowered with more financial and administrative powers which will help them to carry out more developmental works in their areas of jurisdiction.
