Ladakh Activist Sonam Wangchuk Begins Hunger Strike Over Government’s Inaction

Ladakh climate activist Sonam Wangchuk has announced the beginning of an indefinite hunger strike, along with fellow protesters from the Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir, in response to the Indian government’s failure to address their demands. Wangchuk made the announcement during a press conference, marking the next phase of the ongoing ‘Delhi Chalo Padyatra’ protest. According to Kashmir Media Service, Wangchuk, who has been leading the month-long march organized by the Leh Apex Body and the Kargil Democratic Alliance, expressed frustration over the lack of communication from the Indian government. Despite assurances that meetings with top officials, including the Prime Minister, would be scheduled by Friday evening, no response has been received. The protesters are advocating for constitutional protections under the Sixth Schedule for Ladakh. Wangchuk was joined by Ladakh MP Mohmad Haneefa and other representatives from both the Leh Apex Body and the Kargil Democratic Alliance. The activist and 150 ot
hers were detained earlier this week at the Singhu border in Delhi but were later released.
