KCEU hails MEPs for expressing concern over HR situation in IIOJK

Brussels, July 31, 2021 (PPI-OT):Kashmir Council Europe (KCEU) Chairman, Ali Raza Syed has praised sixteen Members of European Parliament (MEPs) for raising concern over the severe violations of human rights in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

In a joint communique addressed to high ranking EU authorities, the MEPs on Friday said, “We, undersigned members of the European Parliament, are writing you to bring your attention to the alarming human rights and humanitarian situation in Jammu and Kashmir.” The letter further said, the miseries of the people of IIOJK have been amply documented in the International Human Rights Watch World Report 2021 as well as the reports of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in 2018 and 2019.

In their letter dispatched to the President of the Commission Ursula Von Der Leyen and the Vice President of the Commission/High Representative Josep Borrell, the MEPs asked EU to convey their grave concerns at the violations of human rights and fundamental freedoms in IIOJK to the Indian government and to take urgent action to address the alarming human rights situation in the region.

Ali Raza Syed in a statement issued in Brussels said, the letter of 16 MEPs to the highest officials of European Union is an important development in the context of severe situation of IIOJK witnessing rising abuses of human rights for many decades specially since 5th August 2019 as India removed special status of territory and took it direct control of New Delhi.

Ali Raza Syed said, EU should use its good offices and resources to stop human rights violation in IIOJK and play its role for a peaceful settlement of the Kashmir dispute according to the UN resolutions and wishes of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
