Kashmiris Suffer Severe Human Rights Abuses in Indian-Controlled Jammu and Kashmir

Srinagar: Unrelenting human rights abuses have become a disturbing norm in Indian-Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), driven by the Indian government’s stringent policies. The region’s residents endure widespread discrimination, marginalization, and severe oppression under these conditions.

According to Kashmir Media Service, IIOJK has been described as the world’s largest militarized zone, where the incidence of killings, torture, and arbitrary detentions has escalated following the revocation of the region’s special status on August 5, 2019. The Modi administration’s enhanced repressive measures have stifled the Kashmiris’ quest for self-determination linked to the protracted Kashmir conflict.

Prominent human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders, and the Jammu and Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society (JKCCS), have recorded extensive human rights infringements such as enforced disappearances, torture, and extrajudicial killings. Parvez Imroz, Chairman of JKCCS, criticized the pervasive culture of impunity in the region, urging the international community to intervene decisively.

These ongoing violations have drawn condemnation from global political figures, highlighting the urgent need for international attention to the humanitarian crisis in IIOJK.
