Srinagar, Today marks a significant observance for Kashmiris on both sides of the Line of Control and around the globe, as they solemnly commemorate the Right to Self-Determination Day. This day rekindles their unwavering commitment to persist in their freedom struggle until they secure their inherent right to self-determination.
According to Kashmir Media Service, this date holds historical importance as it was on this day in 1949 that the United Nations passed a resolution acknowledging the Kashmiris’ inherent right to determine their future through a UN-sponsored plebiscite.
Events including rallies, seminars, and conferences were organized worldwide to remind the UN of its responsibility to implement its resolutions aimed at resolving the Kashmir dispute. This action is seen as crucial to alleviate the Kashmiris from ongoing Indian brutalities.
The 05 January 1949 resolution forms the cornerstone for the resolution of the Kashmir dispute. However, the failure of the World Body to actualize its resolutions has perpetuated the suffering of the Kashmiri people.
In a poignant display of resistance, posters emerged in Srinagar and other areas of Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir. These posters, erected by pro-freedom organizations, implored the United Nations to fulfill its promise made in the 1949 resolution.
The posters, bearing images of illegally detained Hurriyat leaders including Masarrat Aalam Butt, Shabbir Ahmed Shah, Muhammad Yasin Malik, and others, highlight the ongoing state terrorism by India in the region and urge the international community to take cognizance of these grave human rights violations.
As these observances take place, the call for international intervention grows louder, underscoring the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to this long-standing conflict.
