Washington D.C: In a significant development, prominent Kashmiri leaders recently met at Dr. Ghulam Nabi Fai’s residence in Fairfax, Virginia, to deliberate on the ongoing conflict in Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). The meeting focused on formulating strategies to amplify the Kashmiri plight on the global stage and address human rights violations in the region.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the gathering at Dr. Fai’s home, who is the Chairman of the World Forum for Peace and Justice, underscored the urgency of bringing international attention to the Kashmir issue. Dr. Fai appreciated the efforts of the Kashmiri American and Pakistani American communities in highlighting the adverse conditions faced by the people in Kashmir. He criticized the global indifference which, he argued, has only emboldened the Indian authorities’ oppressive measures in the region.
The attendees, including Rizwan Abbasi from ABN Television and Atiq Ahmed Sadazoi from SUNO Television, lauded the proactive stance of the Kashmiri American community, particularly their plans to protest during the upcoming speech by an Indian delegate at the UN General Assembly on September 28. This demonstration aims to protest against the human rights abuses in Kashmir.
Dr. Fai raised concerns about the demographic changes in Kashmir, pointing out the issuance of over 4.3 million Domicile Certificates by the Indian government, which potentially allows over 2.5 million non-Kashmiris to vote in local elections. He condemned the confiscation of land and properties from Kashmiris, calling these actions precursors to genocide.
The meeting also highlighted the incarceration of key Kashmiri leaders like Masarrat Aalam Butt, Mohammad Yasin Malik, and Shabir Ahmed Shah, emphasizing the need for increased awareness and intervention from international communities and Pakistani media.
Reiterating the United Nations Security Council’s resolutions, Dr. Fai affirmed that the resolution of the Kashmir conflict should be conducted through a fair and unbiased plebiscite under UN supervision, reflecting the true will of the Kashmiri people.
The group expressed their solidarity with the residents of IIOJK and announced plans to gather at the UN headquarters in New York on September 28 in a show of support and to urge global leaders to address the human rights situation in Kashmir.
