Kashmiri diaspora takes freedom battle to UN Human Rights Council in Geneva

Srinagar, June 21, 2022 (PPI-OT):Kashmiri diaspora from across the European continent gathered in front of the United Nations Human Rights Council office in Geneva to support freedom for Kashmiris from Indian yoke.

Scores of people from various cities of Europe and United Kingdom (UK), including human rights activists, social worker, academicians and large number of Kashmiris living in the EU and the UK unequivocally condemned the ongoing spree of killing by India in occupied Jammu and Kashmir. They urged international community to take notice of violation of human rights, and systematic killing of Kashmiri youth in the Kashmir valley.

Urging the UN body to speak for voiceless Kashmiris, the diaspora members held demonstrations at the UNHRC office and called for holding India accountable for the war crimes and crimes against humanity ion occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

“The silence of the UNHRC on blatant rights violations in IIOJK raises questions about its credibility,” said Fahim Kayani, President of Tehreek-e-Kashmir UK, who led the Kashmiri diaspora group to Geneva.

“India is the biggest violator of international norms, UN resolutions and brutally violates universal human rights which demand international intervention in IIOJK where India is replicating Nazi-inspired tactics,” Kayani said.

The joint demonstration was initiated by Tehreek-e-Kashmir Italy and Kashmir delegation to Geneva where APHC-AJK leaders Altaf Hussain Wani, Syed Faiz Naqshbandi, Sardar Amjad Yousaf, Hasan-al- Banna, Advocate Pervez, Shamim Shawl, Professor Shagufta Ashraf, Dr Sahira Shah were invited as special guests.

“India cannot enjoy the perks and privileges of the western world where democracy and respect to human rights take precedence to any support,” Kayani said. Referring to illegal ban on schools run under Falah-e-Aam trust (FAT), Kayani said Indian fascist regime is hell bent on depriving Kashmir youth of their religion, faith, traditions, culture and history.

Hurriyat Leader Altaf Hussain Wani said the fascist Indian military regime was moving fast to artificially change the Muslim-majority character of the UN-designated disputed territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Syed Faiz Naqshbandi said, “India knows this bare truth that Kashmiris will vote against it in UN-monitored plebiscite and that is why it wants to effect changes in the demography of the region.”

The protesters criticized the rising Islamophobia in India and feared BJP would further fuel the fire by creating communal tensions in Kashmir to further their exclusive political ideology of a Hindu-dominated Kashmir. Demonstrators while criticizing Indian courts demanded the free and fair trial for jailed and convicted Kashmiri freedom leader, Yaseen Malik.

They also demanded the release of political prisoners including Shabbir Ahmad Shah, Aasiya Andrabi, Masarrat Aalam Butt, Nayeem Ahmed Khan, Merjaudin Kalwal, Peer Saifullah Alta Ahmed Shah, and rights activists Khurram Pervaiz and Ahsan Untoo and urged international community and the United Nations to intervene before it is too late.
