Washington: The Kashmiri diaspora in the United States has planned to organize peaceful protests on August 5, 2024, to mark the fifth anniversary of the Indian government’s revocation of Articles 370 and 35-A, which granted special status to the region of Jammu and Kashmir.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the revocation has been widely criticized by the global Kashmiri community and international figures, including United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. The protests aim to highlight the ongoing issues in Kashmir and challenge the narrative promoted by the Indian government, which asserts normalcy in the region.
The planning meeting drew notable Kashmiri figures such as Dr. Ghulam Nabi Fai, Sardar Zarif Khan, and Raja Liaqat Kayani. The event, set to take place in Washington, D.C., seeks to bolster the Kashmiri freedom movement and affirm the diaspora’s commitment to advocating for Kashmir’s self-determination.
Participants are also encouraged to support Sardar Zarif Khan’s recovery from recent thoracic spine surgery, reflecting the community’s solidarity in personal and political matters alike.
