Birmingham: Members of the Kashmiri diaspora gathered in the UK for a conference dedicated to remembering and paying homage to Syed Ali Geelani, a prominent figure in the resistance against Indian rule in Kashmir. The event focused on honoring his life and contributions, particularly highlighting the circumstances of his death on September 1, 2021, while under house arrest.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the conference featured extensive discussions on Geelani’s life and the impact of his death, which occurred at his residence in Hyderpora. Participants held special prayers for Geelani and other Kashmiri martyrs, expressing deep respect for their sacrifices. Fahim Kayani, leader of Tehreek-e-Kashmir UK, passionately spoke about Geelani, describing him as a symbol of the Kashmiri struggle. “Shaheed Gilani Sahab immortalized the Kashmiri resistance against India,” Kayani stated, emphasizing the lessons of resilience and sacrifice that Gilani’s life exemplifies.
The conference also addressed the broader implications of Geelani’s life for the Kashmiri resistance movement. Muhammad Ghalib, another senior figure among the Kashmiri diaspora, proposed that Geelani’s life should serve as an inspirational model for future generations. He also highlighted the need for the Kashmiri leadership to adapt to the ongoing challenges in the region, particularly the oppressive conditions imposed by Indian authorities. “India has imposed graveyard silence in occupied Kashmir, which should give us ample time to strategize at international platforms,” Ghalib remarked.
Supporting Ghalib’s views, Afzal Butt, President of PFUJ, underscored the importance of continuous international advocacy and diplomatic efforts to keep the Kashmir issue alive on the global stage. The conference also saw contributions from various other participants, including Kashmiri poet Arif Khawaja and several community leaders, who all echoed the sentiments of reverence and determination to continue advocating for the Kashmiri cause in honor of Geelani’s legacy.
