Islamabad: An eight-member delegation from Kashmir has embarked on a journey to Geneva to participate in the 57th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), representing diverse voices from both sides of the Line of Control.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the delegation comprises senior Hurriyat leaders and advocates for Kashmiri rights, including Ghulam Muhammad Safi of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference Azad Jammu and Kashmir chapter, Altaf Hussain Wani, Sardar Amjad Yousaf Khan, Ms Shameema Shawl, Syed Faiz Naqashbandi, Dr. Shagufta Ashraf, Dr. Raja Sajjad Lateef, and Naila Altaf Kayani. Each delegate brings a unique perspective and expertise, aiming to present a comprehensive view of the Kashmir situation on an international stage.
During their stay in Geneva, the delegates plan to meet with key UN officials, including Special Rapporteurs and diplomats, as well as representatives from various international non-governmental organizations. Their agenda is to highlight the ongoing human rights violations in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, particularly focusing on the Indian government’s actions post the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A, which they argue have led to increased militarization and suppression of the local population.
The delegation will also challenge the portrayal of normalcy and development in the region as propagated by the Indian government. They aim to expose the realities on the ground, contradicting official narratives with firsthand accounts and evidence of human rights abuses.
Additionally, the Kashmiri representatives will address concerns over the Indian government’s attempts to hold elections in the region, which they view as a diversion from the internationally recognized right to a plebiscite as outlined in United Nations Security Council resolutions.
Apart from their official meetings, the delegation will host several seminars and symposiums on the fringes of the UNHRC session to further discuss the Kashmir issue, aiming to garner international support for a peaceful resolution to the long-standing conflict.
