Srinagar, A monumental achievement has been realized in Vailoo Kunzar village of Baramulla district, where artisans have completed what is considered one of the largest hand-knotted carpets ever produced in Kashmir.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the carpet, measuring 40 feet by 72 feet, required the persistent effort of 25 artisans over eight years to complete. It contains an astounding 37.5 crore silk knots, symbolizing not only the artisanal skill prevalent in the region but also the deep cultural heritage of Kashmiri carpet weaving.
Habibullah Sheikh, the chief artisan, along with his brother and a team, undertook this extensive project after being approached by a Srinagar-based carpet exporter. The task required meticulous planning and significant dedication, culminating in a product that Sheikh hopes will set new standards in the carpet industry.
Bashir Ahmad Shah, another artisan involved in the project, expressed pride in their accomplishment, noting the unprecedented scale of the carpet. The team is already engaged in another ambitious weaving project, aiming to further elevate the art of Kashmiri carpet making.
The completion of the carpet not only showcases the exceptional capabilities of Kashmiri weavers but also highlights the global relevance of their traditional crafts. Artisans like Abdul Khaliq are optimistic about the future, urging support for the carpet weaving community to restore and enhance the legacy of Kashmiri carpets.
