Kashmir Conference in Dallas Addresses Struggle for Self-Determination

DALLAS, At the Kashmir Conference in Dallas, Texas, related to the Kashmir Black Day, speakers highlighted October 27, 1947, as a significant date, marking when India took control of Jammu and Kashmir. Since that time, they emphasized that Indian forces have maintained a stringent hold over the region.

According to a news release by Kashmir Media Service, the conference, organized by “Friends of Kashmir,” was attended by Terry Miz, the representative member of the state of Texas. In her remarks, Miz underscored America’s commitment to human rights and voiced concerns over the treatment of Kashmiris, emphasizing their right to self-determination and condemning any forms of violence against them.

Abdul Hafeez Khan, a prominent social leader, emphasized that the pursuit of freedom is a fundamental right. He urged global human rights advocates to support the Kashmiri cause.

Ghazala Habib, founder chairperson of Friends of Kashmir, recounted the longstanding efforts by Kashmiris to end India’s occupation. She urged the United Nations to honor its commitments to the Kashmiri people, referencing the 18 resolutions passed in their favor.

The Deputy Consul General of the Pakistani Consulate in Houston, Ashar Shahzad, reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the Kashmiri cause, pledging ongoing moral, political, and diplomatic support.

Other contributors included poet Yunus Ejaz, who provided a poetic discourse on Kashmir, and Talat Khan, who delved into Kashmir’s history. Attendees also viewed a report by Haika Khan detailing reported Indian actions in Kashmir.

Significantly, a delegation from Sikhs for Justice also attended. Sikh leaders Gurvinder Singh and Surinder Singh expressed solidarity with the Kashmiri cause and criticized India’s policies.

To conclude the event, social leaders Barkat Baseria and Ashraf Bashir presented certificates to Friends of Kashmir members including Iqbal Hasan, Namir Awan, Karan Hayat, Arjamand Hayat, and Raima Awan.
