Bengaluru, March 18, 2022 (PPI-OT): A tense situation prevailed in the coastal town of Malpe in Udupi district of the Indian state of Karnataka on Friday after graffiti against the hijab verdict surfaced on the wall of a building. Graffiti was seen on the wall of a building reads “hijab is our right” and “hijab movement” in Malpe Bailakere locality in southern Indian state. The police department has beefed up security in Malpe in the wake of the incident.
On the other, shutdown was observed in Karnataka against the high court verdict upholding government’s ban on head scarp/hijab in classrooms across the state. Shops and commercial establishments owned by Muslims remained closed for the entire day on Thursday. Roads and markets wore a deserted look in most of the towns across the state.
State capital Bengaluru too came under the influence of the shutdown in areas with sizable Muslim population including Commercial Street and Shivajinagar in the heart of the city.
