Bengaluru, May 14, 2023 (PPI-OT): BC Nagesh, Karnataka’s Education Minister who enforced the controversial hijab ban in schools and colleges has lost the assembly elections as Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) suffered a crushing defeat in the Indian state. BC Nagesh also introduced changes to Karnataka’s school syllabus that were seen as ‘saffronisation’ of education.
Nagesh lost to Congress’ K Shadakshari, from the Tiptur constituency, by a margin of 17,652 votes. He had won from the same constituency in 2008 and 2018.
The Congress fielded a total of 12 Muslim candidates in the state elections, and 10 out of them were successful. They include Rahim Khan, Rizwan Arshad, Zameer Ahmad Khan, Iqbal Hussain, Abdul Qadir, Tanveer Seth, Abdul Hameed Kala Sahib, Muhammad Salam, Kiniz. Fatima and Asif Seth.
A total of 113 seats were required to form the government in Karnataka, but the Congress won a historic victory with 136, defeating the BJP despite Prime Minister Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP President took part in the election campaign.
