Kargil, The Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) has called for a half-day general strike across Ladakh in support of Sonam Wangchuk’s hunger strike, now entering its 13th day. Wangchuk, a celebrated education reformist, is demanding statehood and constitutional safeguards for Ladakh, sparking significant local backing.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Wangchuk’s protest has highlighted the urgent need for Ladakh’s constitutional protection, with over 250 people recently gathering in freezing temperatures to support his cause. These demonstrations aim to protect Ladakh’s environment and its indigenous culture from the perceived neglect and mismanagement by the Indian government.
Wangchuk has openly criticized the central government for its lack of action in providing democratic rights and autonomy to Ladakh, comparing its treatment to that of a “Stepmother of Democracy.” The KDA’s endorsement of tomorrow’s strike underlines the growing discontent within Ladakh regarding its current political status and governance.
KDA co-chairman Qamar Ali Akhoon highlighted the strike’s purpose to further inform the public about ongoing dialogues with the government. Meanwhile, Asgar Ali Karbalai, another co-chairman, dismissed efforts to create communal divisions within Ladakh, stating the community’s united front in support of the agitation. Following the government’s dismissal of Ladakh’s main requests, plans for a joint leadership meeting in Leh or Kargil are underway to discuss future actions.
This collective mobilization in Ladakh underscores the region’s demand for greater autonomy and recognition, aligning with Wangchuk’s vision for its development and preservation.
