Kargil, In a striking display of unity and demand for political rights, the Kargil district in the Ladakh region of Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir observed a significant half-day shutdown. Residents rallied to voice their demands for statehood and the implementation of the Sixth Schedule, reflecting deep-rooted concerns over their region’s political and environmental future.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the shutdown saw widespread participation as business establishments shuttered and citizens took to the streets. The Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), in collaboration with the Apex Body of Leh (ABL), orchestrated the shutdown to underscore the urgent need for constitutional safeguards in Ladakh.
The protest saw robust participation, with thousands marching from Fatima Chowk to Hussaini Park, armed with placards and chanting for Ladakh’s democratic restoration and constitutional rights. The demonstrators also expressed solidarity with renowned climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, advocating for similar causes through a hunger strike in Leh.
Amidst frigid conditions, Wangchuk’s protest, reaching its 15th day, highlighted the broader environmental stakes, particularly concerning Ladakh’s glaciers. His resolve, mirrored by over a hundred supporters enduring harsh outdoor conditions, underscores a poignant message on environmental preservation tied to Ladakh’s political status.
The movement in Kargil garnered backing from diverse Ladakh-based organizations, signifying a collective stand against current governance structures. Furthermore, CPI (M) leader Muhammad Yousuf Tarigami extended solidarity from Jammu and Kashmir, emphasizing the shared sentiments against Ladakh’s separation and advocating for the central government’s attention to Ladakh’s grievances.
