Karachi: Following significant rainfall, Karachi’s main roads remain clear thanks to preemptive measures by city officials, as stated by Deputy Mayor Karachi, Salman Abdullah Murad. This comes amid ongoing efforts to maintain and improve the city’s readiness for monsoon conditions.
According to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, the Deputy Mayor praised the strategies implemented prior to the rain, which have effectively kept the roads free of water and passable. During a tour of the affected areas on Tuesday morning, he noted that a rain emergency cell had been established at the KMC Sports Complex on the mayor’s orders, which will remain operational throughout the monsoon season. The cell coordinates efforts across various departments, each assigned shifts to handle the ongoing situation.
Murad emphasized the importance of continuous vigilance and preparedness, mentioning that any negligence in handling rain-related issues would lead to disciplinary action. He also highlighted that the necessary machinery, like pumps for draining underpasses, has been deployed to strategic locations to alleviate any potential water accumulation. This proactive approach is part of a broader strategy to combat the impacts of climate change, which has significantly affected Pakistan, including Karachi.
The Deputy Mayor also called for a collective effort from all town chairmen and municipal bodies to ensure the safety and convenience of the citizens during this period. Further, he pointed out that the Meteorological Department’s forecast had led to the cancellation of leaves for municipal services staff, underscoring the city’s commitment to effective crisis management during heavy rains.
