Srinagar, Kashmiri journalist Sajad Gul is still detained in a jail in Uttar Pradesh, India, weeks after the High Court of occupied Jammu and Kashmir quashed his detention under the Public Safety Act (PSA) on November 19 last year. Gul was initially arrested in January 2022 for uploading a picture of a protest demonstration on social media against the killing of Kashmiri youth by Indian troops in Bandipora district.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Sajad Gul, 27, was booked under the PSA on January 16, 2022, a day after he was granted bail in a separate criminal case. His arrest followed the posting of a video clip about a protest at the home of a Kashmiri youth, who was killed in what was claimed to be a fake encounter by Indian troops. The court quashing Gul’s PSA observed that there were no specific allegations against him that could be considered prejudicial to the state’s security, and authorities did not apply their mind while passing the dossier.

Gul’s family received a release order from the High Court on November 20 and has since been awaiting his return. Despite efforts and communicating the release order to relevant departments, Gul remains in detention. His brother expressed concern and confusion over why Sajad is still being held, especially after the High Court quashed his PSA detention. He mentioned that if there are other FIRs against Sajad, the authorities are still required to transfer him to a nearby prison.

Sajad Gul’s case came into the limelight just days after Fahad Shah, another Kashmiri journalist, was granted bail by the High Court in a separate case. Gul, who was working as a trainee reporter for Kashmir Walla magazine before his arrest, is one of several journalists in the region facing legal challenges and detention.
