Karachi: In preparation for Muharram-ul-Haram, Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab has announced that the city’s administration is actively collaborating with scholars and representatives from various schools of thought to address issues collectively. The focus remains on promoting unity and harmony among Muslims, as well as ensuring that municipal, civic, and law enforcement agencies are fully engaged in the process.
At a meeting held at the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) head office, Mayor Wahab emphasized the importance of peace and mutual respect, stating that visible efforts are necessary across the city to demonstrate commitment to resolving concerns. Key figures in attendance included Deputy Mayor Salman Abdullah Murad, Municipal Commissioner S.M. Afzal Zaidi, and other city and religious leaders.
Mayor Wahab assured attendees that any encroachments along the routes of processions and near religious gatherings, or Majalis, will be cleared. He also addressed the need for uninterrupted electricity supply, urging K-Electric to prevent load-shedding during the first ten days of Muharram, particularly around Imambargahs and procession routes.
Further instructions were given to repair and reopen the damaged iron bridge near Muhammadi Masjid in Orangi Town, alongside improvements in cleanliness, road surfacing, and sewerage along procession paths.
The mayor highlighted the coordinated efforts of Rangers, police, district administration, fire brigade, and rescue services to ensure smooth processions. Departments are working together to resolve issues related to water supply and sewerage on a priority basis.
During the meeting, religious scholars presented several issues, prompting Mayor Wahab to issue immediate directives for their resolution, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to supporting Muharram activities and fostering community unity.
