Karachi Sees Push for Elimination of Forced Labor in Brick Kilns Sector

Karachi: A significant initiative aimed at eliminating forced labor and improving working conditions in the brick kilns sector was highlighted during a capacity-building session in Faisalabad, orchestrated by the Employers Federation of Pakistan (EFP) with support from the International Labor Organization (ILO).

According to Employers’ Federation of Pakistan, EFP Secretary General Syed Nazar Ali emphasized the session’s critical role in enhancing the operational standards and sustainability of businesses within the sector. The session, which was the eighth in a series targeting members of the Brick Kilns Owners Association Pakistan (BKOAP), focused on increasing awareness of labor standards, including those related to forced and bonded labor. The discussions also delved into strategies for advocacy and representation in both local and international forums to amplify the sector’s voice in policy-making dialogues with government entities and relevant institutions.

Shoaib Niazi, President of BKOAP, in his remarks, called for the education of members on labor laws and the pursuit of legislation tailored to the unique challenges of brick kiln operations. He addressed ongoing issues like the adoption of Zig Zag technology and the scarcity of skilled labor, stressing the need for systemic reforms to eradicate debt bondage under the ‘Peshgi System’ and ensure fair working conditions. The session also highlighted critical sector issues such as a declining workforce interest, rising manufacturing costs, and the absence of supportive policies and infrastructure, underscoring the sector’s substantial contribution to the rural economy.

The meeting concluded with a consensus on the necessity for sector-specific legislation that integrates social security measures and provides healthcare facilities near brick kilns, aiming to foster sustainable development within the sector.
