Karachi: Despite receiving a substantial 227 mm of rainfall over three consecutive days, the condition of 106 roads in Karachi has remained commendably intact. The recent weather events tested the city’s infrastructure, yet no significant damages were reported, showcasing effective local governance and maintenance efforts.
According to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, the resilience of Karachi’s roads can be attributed to the diligent work of both the KMC municipal services and the water board staff, who have been praised for their exceptional commitment to resolving sewage issues promptly. This proactive approach has prevented the usual water accumulation problems that typically follow such heavy rainfall events.
In addition, the Sindh Government has recently increased the funds allocated to the Union Committee from 5 lakhs to 12 lakhs, a move that further supports local governance in enhancing urban infrastructure and services. However, it was noted that the Amir of Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi, Muneem Zafar Sahib, was unaware of this financial adjustment.
The efforts of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) have also been highlighted, with the chairman and party workers vigorously fulfilling the promises made by their leader, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. Contrasting political perspectives were mentioned, noting that while Jamaat-e-Islami has been critical, the Mayor of Karachi, represented by spokesperson Karamullah Waqasi, emphasized a collaborative spirit among all political parties to prioritize the city’s larger interests.
This collective endeavor by local government bodies and various political parties has played a crucial role in maintaining the city’s functionality during adverse weather conditions, demonstrating a commitment to serving the community and improving the quality of life for the residents of Karachi.
