Islamabad: Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has reached a new milestone in container throughput, handling over 2.651 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) during the fiscal year 2025-26, as announced by Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry.

According to Press Information Department, the achievement, finalized weeks before the fiscal year’s end, surpasses the previous record and signifies increased confidence in Pakistan’s maritime sector and enhanced port performance. “KPT has surpassed last year’s record of 2.651 million TEUs, creating history by achieving the highest-ever container handling volume,” Chaudhry stated, attributing the success to workforce dedication, operational efficiency improvements, and governmental efforts to bolster maritime infrastructure.

Admiral Shahid Ahmad, chairman of KPT, highlighted the port’s capability to manage growing trade volumes, supporting national economic objectives. “The ongoing reforms, infrastructure upgrades, and measures aimed at improving port services have contributed to the rise in cargo and container traffic,” he noted, emphasizing Karachi Port’s critical role in handling a large portion of the country’s seaborne trade.

Minister Chaudhry added that the enhanced efficiency and capacity expansion at the port are expected to elevate Pakistan’s competitiveness in regional and international shipping markets. The government, he assured, will persist in investing in maritime infrastructure and modernization to advance Pakistan as a key logistics and transshipment hub connecting South Asia, Central Asia, and the Middle East.

The record throughput is perceived as a sign of increased commercial activity and the growing significance of Pakistani ports within regional supply chains, concluded Junaid Chaudhry.
