Karachi Mayor Unveils Transparency Initiative for Road Repairs

Karachi: In a bid to enhance transparency and efficiency in city governance, Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab announced a comprehensive plan to repair roads and streetlights damaged by recent rains. The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has published extensive details of its development projects, budgets, and the road rehabilitation process on its official website. A new public complaint system has also been launched to address road-related issues promptly.

Speaking at a press conference at KMC Head Office, Mayor Wahab stated that repair work would commence immediately, with a target completion timeline of 60 days. Each of Karachi’s seven districts will have a dedicated contractor to ensure swift repairs. The details of these contracts and ongoing works are available on KMC’s website and will be updated daily.

The mayor emphasized the need for accountability and transparency, urging other local bodies, such as the Towns administration and Karachi Development Authority (KDA), to disclose their responsibilities and ongoing projects. Citizens can report issues on the 106 roads under KMC’s jurisdiction by calling 1339. The mayor, along with other officials, will supervise the progress.

Mayor Wahab criticized those questioning the allocation of funds, insisting that money collected should be spent on infrastructure rehabilitation. He expressed solidarity with flood-affected regions in Pakistan and assured support for Punjab.

The mayor highlighted that the city has moved past the rain emergency and is now focusing on infrastructure repair. Details of KMC’s responsibilities, including road locations and conditions, are publicly accessible. The initiative aims to inform citizens of government performance and ensure quality in road construction.

Deputy Mayor Karachi Salman Abdullah Murad and other city officials attended the press conference, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to transparent governance. The mayor reiterated that political differences should not hinder progress and called for collaboration to improve Karachi’s infrastructure.
