Karachi Mayor Unveils Hanif Mohammad Cricket Ground, Focuses on Public Spaces

Karachi: Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab inaugurated the newly established Hanif Mohammad Cricket Ground at Jheel Park, signaling his administration’s dedication to revitalizing public spaces and enhancing recreational facilities for the city’s residents. During the ceremony, Mayor Wahab highlighted the efforts of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) to improve parks, playgrounds, and public areas to ensure they serve as safe and inclusive spaces.

Mayor Wahab stated, “Karachi’s historic buildings and public spaces are being returned to the people,” referencing notable restorations such as Frere Hall and Khaliq Dina Hall, with plans for Denso Hall to follow. He also mentioned ongoing renovation work at Empress Market, where a cultural activity zone is planned.

The Mayor extended an invitation to writers, artists, and performers to host events at these heritage sites. Additionally, he announced plans to rehabilitate 50 parks throughout Karachi in 2025, with two openings scheduled in District West and District South later this week.

The cricket ground, dedicated to Pakistan’s cricket icon Hanif Mohammad, offers cricket, football, and walking track facilities for women and senior citizens. Mayor Wahab noted that this project aligns with the Pakistan Peoples Party’s vision to deliver quality public amenities.

In a move impacting the city’s traffic management, Mayor Wahab declared the abolition of parking fees on all public roads, effective after June 30, with fees only applicable in enclosed parking plazas.

He also shared personal reflections on Hanif Mohammad, revealing that Mohammad’s son, Shoaib, intends to establish a cricket academy at the ground. Further development plans were discussed for I.I. Chundrigar Road, Pakistan Chowk, Burns Garden, and local food streets.

Mayor Wahab concluded by emphasizing a vision for a dynamic and prosperous Karachi, stating, “My vision is a vibrant, smiling, and prosperous Karachi – a city we can proudly pass on to future generations. Only those who serve will be allowed to lead.”
