Karachi Mayor Unveils Ambitious Budget for 2025-26, Pledges Infrastructure Growth

Karachi: Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab presented the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) budget for the fiscal year 2025-26, highlighting significant development and financial stability. Deputy Mayor Salman Abdullah Murad and Municipal Commissioner S.M. Afzal Zaidi were present during the budget session in the City Council.

The mayor emphasized the progress achieved over the past two years, citing infrastructure restoration and historical building renovations as visible outcomes of challenging decisions. He noted the Pakistan People’s Party’s (PPP) commitment to public service and the progress made towards KMC’s financial stability.

The 2025-26 budget reflects the efforts of the past two years, with development projects selected in consultation with council members. Mayor Wahab mentioned the responsibilities entrusted by Chairman PPP Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and the party’s dedication to resolving Karachi’s issues.

Key budget highlights include the integration of KMC employee salaries into the World Bank’s SAP system and the resumption of MUCT collection through K-Electric, with significant revenue expected next year. Development projects are planned across all districts, including a new road connecting Lyari to the port and shipyard, repairs on Hub River Road, and a new overhead bridge on Korangi Causeway.

Long-standing dues for retired and deceased KMC and DMC employees have been addressed, with Rs. 600 million paid out. Solar energy conversion for municipal buildings is underway, with Rs. 220.2 million allocated for this initiative.

Historical renovations have been completed, and further restoration is planned for several markets. The budget also includes significant allocations for medical services and the establishment of a modern meat section and new parking areas.

The PPP has increased UC grants to empower local service delivery and introduced travel allowances for council members. Environmental initiatives include a ban on plastic bags and the allocation of funds for electric bikes.

Public-private partnerships have been initiated for urban forests, and administrative efficiency measures have saved fuel costs. The budget session concluded with suggestions and views shared by parliamentary leaders and council members.
