Karachi Mayor Outlines Ambitious Plans for Wastewater Treatment Expansion

Karachi, Mayor Karachi, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, announced significant plans for the expansion of wastewater treatment capacity in the city. Currently, the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation manages the treatment of 54 million gallons daily (MGD) at the Mauripur Treatment Plant in Kemari, ensuring compliance with local environmental standards.

According to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, the city plans to increase its wastewater treatment capacity to 135 MGD within two years and aims to reach 300 MGD by December 2027. This initiative is part of a broader strategy by the Sindh Government to enhance urban cleanliness and reduce marine pollution.

Mayor Wahab highlighted recent upgrades to Wastewater Treatment Pumping Stations, funded by the Sindh Government, to improve the quality of water disposal into the Lyari River. He emphasized the commitment of the local government to meet international environmental standards and collaborate with both local and global partners to tackle environmental challenges effectively.
