Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab Highlights Commitment to Development and Sports on Defense Day


Karachi: On Pakistan’s Defense Day, Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab underscored the historical importance of the sacrifices made on September 6, reaffirming the city’s commitment to development, prosperity, and peace. During a flag-hoisting ceremony at the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) head office, Wahab emphasized the city’s dedication to various initiatives, including sports development and infrastructure improvements.



According to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, Mayor Wahab, while speaking at the event, also announced the construction of a new sports complex named after Olympic gold medalist Arshad Nadeem, reflecting the city’s commitment to nurturing talent and promoting sports as a vital element of youth development. He expressed pride in the participation of women in sports and the arts, highlighting their integral role in the country’s progress.



Mayor Wahab detailed several city projects including the immediate commencement of road construction and repairs post-rainy season, and stringent oversight to prevent any negligence in these projects. He also mentioned a significant upgrade to the city’s water infrastructure with a new line from Hub Canal and reconstruction plans for Murghi Khana Bridge.



Further elaborating on his administration’s focus on sports, Wahab presided over a girls’ hockey match at the Olympian Islahuddin Hockey Academy, where he spoke about the spirit of resilience and unity derived from Defense Day. He celebrated the victory of Islahuddin XI over Samiullah XI and awarded cash prizes to participants of an art competition, aiming to foster creativity among the youth.



The event, attended by key city officials including Commissioner Karachi Hassan Naqvi and various sports and municipal authorities, highlighted the administration’s plans to enhance public-private partnerships for managing city grounds and increasing funds for Union Councils by 140 percent to boost local governance.
