Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab Announces Safe City Project Approval and Inaugurates New Command Center


Karachi, Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab announced the approval of the PC-1 of the Safe City project, set to commence with the formation of the new government. The project’s first phase will focus on enhancing security in key areas of the city, including the red zone, railway, port, and entrances. This announcement was made during the inauguration ceremony of the Command and Control Center of CPLC Neighborhood Society Zone, organized by Kathiawar Cooperative Housing Society.



According to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, Mayor Wahab emphasized the importance of public-private partnerships and community cooperation in addressing the city’s challenges. He stated that the Safe City project’s implementation would begin soon, starting with the installation of monitoring cameras at strategic locations. Wahab highlighted the project’s significance in improving Karachi’s security and infrastructure.



During the inauguration, Mayor Wahab also mentioned the installation of 165 cameras in Muhammad Ali Society under the Neighborhood Scheme, noting a significant reduction in crime in areas where the scheme has been implemented. He assured continued support from the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) to residents and expressed optimism that the Safe City Project would make Karachi a safer and better city to live in. Plans to extend the CPLC neighborhood scheme to the KMC and Union Council levels were also discussed, with a focus on safeguarding parks, playgrounds, and other public spaces.



Additional IG Sindh Khadim Hussain Rind, who spoke at the event, shared his personal experience of a zero crime rate in his area, attributing it to effective cooperation. He provided historical context, comparing the ratio of policemen to the population from British times to the present, and expressed his determination to improve Karachi’s safety ranking among world cities.



Prominent industrialist Zubair Habeeb also addressed the gathering, praising the effectiveness of the command and control centers under the Neighborhood Scheme in reducing crime. He commended the technological advancements of the police force and highlighted the current absence of kidnapping for ransom cases in Karachi. However, he also pointed out challenges in the legal system, where arrested individuals are often released due to various reasons.



The event concluded with Mayor Karachi inaugurating the new command and control center and taking a detailed tour of the facility. The inauguration marks a significant step towards enhancing public safety and security in Karachi through technological and community-driven initiatives.
