Karachi Mayor Initiates Comprehensive Clean-Up of City Drains Ahead of Monsoon Season

Karachi, In preparation for the upcoming monsoon season, Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab has announced the start of a city-wide clean-up operation targeting 46 major storm water drains to prevent flooding and ensure smooth drainage.

According to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, the clean-up initiative was revealed by Mayor Wahab during his visit to various storm water drains across the city including Manzoor Colony, Qayyumabad, and Mauripur among others. Accompanied by Municipal Commissioner Afzal Zaidi and other officials, the Mayor inspected the progress of the cleaning efforts and directed attention to critical areas requiring immediate action.

Mayor Wahab highlighted that, in addition to the major drains, there are 500 smaller drainage channels that are also being cleaned to facilitate efficient rainwater management, especially in suburban areas. The focus is to minimize the disruption caused by the seasonal rains and maintain traffic flow by promptly clearing water from main highways.

He further stated that municipal staff will be actively involved on the ground during the monsoon, with himself overseeing the operations. Instructions have been issued to ensure that dewatering pumps and necessary machinery are strategically placed for rapid response to any flooding. Mayor Wahab also emphasized the continuous operational readiness of municipal services, with offices and workshops to remain open round the clock and staff working in three shifts.

This proactive approach follows previous years’ strategies where critical choke points were identified for early cleaning to enhance the city’s resilience against monsoon-related challenges.
