Karachi Mayor Inaugurates Advanced Intensive Care Ward at Heart Institute

KARACHI, Mayor of Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab inaugurated the new Blue Code Intensive Care Ward at the Karachi Institute of Heart Diseases, equipped with state-of-the-art medical facilities to enhance cardiac care. The ward, designed to provide immediate and advanced care for heart attack victims, includes updated catherization laboratories and a mini-ICU-like library for urgent cases.

According to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, during the inauguration, Mayor Wahab highlighted the significant cost savings achieved in establishing the ward, which was set up for only Rs 20 lakh, far below the projected costs of Rs 12 to Rs 19 crore. He stressed the administration’s commitment to transparency and efficient use of resources. The event was attended by Dr. Rifat Sultana, Executive Director of the Karachi Institute of Heart Diseases, and other key medical and administrative staff who discussed future enhancements to the facility.

Mayor Wahab also addressed broader healthcare improvements under his administration, including the activation of a nursing school at the hospital, which currently educates 270 students, with 130 attending free on merit. He noted the resolution of previous ambulance shortages with the addition of 1122 ambulances now stationed at the hospital. Additionally, he touched on infrastructure developments in the area surrounding the hospital, emphasizing road repairs and the installation of street lights, which have significantly improved access and safety for the community and hospital visitors.
