Karachi: On the occasion of Pakistan’s 77th Independence Day, Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab expressed a commitment to leading the city towards prosperity and addressing local challenges. The celebrations, marked by a wreath-laying at Mazar-e-Quaid and various civic activities, emphasized the significance of freedom and the responsibility of governance.
According to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, Mayor Wahab, speaking after the wreath-laying ceremony at Mazar-e-Quaid, reflected on the historical struggle led by Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and the ongoing efforts to guide Karachi along a path of development. He acknowledged the hardships faced by the people of Palestine and Kashmir, underscoring the value of freedom. In response to a question from the media about the monsoon preparations, he highlighted that proactive measures over the past month and a half had helped mitigate the usual monsoon-related disruptions, with over 22 thousand tons of debris being cleared from rain drains.
The Mayor also touched on collaborative efforts with the Sindh government and federal authorities to reduce electricity costs, an issue pressing for Karachi’s economically vulnerable populations. Furthermore, he announced an upcoming report detailing the utilization of funds collected for Karachi’s development.
The day was also notable for the start of a tree plantation campaign by the Mayor, symbolizing a commitment to environmental sustainability. The rally organized by the fire brigade department demonstrated the active role of municipal services in enhancing public safety and awareness.
