Karachi Mayor Addresses Fire Safety Concerns at International Trade Exhibition

Karachi, Mayor of Karachi, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, emphasized the need for comprehensive solutions to multi-jurisdictional issues and fire safety measures in the city. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Fire and Safety Asia International Trade Exhibition at the Expo Center, he outlined the city’s plans to enhance fire safety protocols and the fire brigade department.

According to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, Mayor Wahab addressed the challenges facing Karachi, including the necessity for legislation regarding the installation of fire safety equipment in buildings. He announced that a policy would be developed in the next city council meeting to address these issues. The mayor’s visit to the exhibition involved inspecting various stalls showcasing fire vehicles, equipment, and machinery.

Highlighting the importance of fire safety, Mayor Wahab urged for increased awareness in Karachi, particularly in the context of evolving global standards. He noted the active participation of international exhibitors, with over 50 stalls dedicated to fire safety equipment, as a significant step towards enhancing local awareness and technology adoption.

Mayor Wahab encouraged the citizens of Karachi to visit the three-day exhibition to gain insights into fire safety and adapt to the latest technological advancements. He stressed the importance of fire safety devices and emergency exits in high-rise buildings, particularly in commercial complexes. Acknowledging the desire for improved firefighting systems and modern facilities for firefighters, he called for a collective responsibility towards these goals.

The mayor revealed that 578 buildings in Karachi have been declared extremely dangerous and unsafe. He advocated for a joint strategy to prevent accidents and announced the formation of a force combining the firefighting department with the rescue unit. This initiative aims to minimize loss of life and property in emergencies by providing timely action and training to the relevant manpower.

Furthermore, Mayor Wahab mentioned steps taken by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, including audits of fire and safety equipment and emergency exits in commercial buildings along major highways. These measures are part of a broader strategy to prevent fire incidents through preemptive actions and public awareness.

In his concluding remarks, he noted that arrangements for firefighting have been made in Karachi’s industrial zones through collaboration with industrialists’ associations and various institutions, enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of fire safety measures in the city.
